1) Ecole thématique du PNP --- First solids and planetesimals: formation conditions and evolution --- Ecole de Physique des Houches --- 23-28 février 2020
ABSTRACT - The school will take place in a dynamic scientific context with new emerging models of the formation conditions of the first solids of the Solar System based on meteorite studies. In addition, important theoretical developments have been established on the conditions of dust coagulation and gas-dust instabilities in accretion disks. Finally, the observation with the ALMA interferometer (Chile) revealed complex structures with the systematic presence of rings and gaps in all extended protoplanetary disks. These new models and observations offer a unique opportunity to advance our understanding of the formation and evolution of the first objects in planetary systems, which are characterized by extremely complex phenomena at different scales. The school will thus address multiple complementary aspects of the formation of the Solar System through lectures that will be given by specialists.
This is an interdisciplinary school, at the frontier between planetary science, chemistry of interstellar medium and cosmochemistry.
The school is open to Ph.D. students and researchers who wish to broaden their knowledge. The lectures will be accessible to non specialists, but a background in planetary sciences, geo/cosmochemistry or astrophysics is required. All lectures will be in English.
REGISTRATION - The cost for a full-board stay (food and accommodation) at the Ecole for 5 days (from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon) is 450 € per person. There is no other registration fee. Special diet can be accommodated (please specify in your indication of interest).
The number of participants is limited to 70 (including the lecturers). Declaration of interest should be sent as soon as possible and before December, 1st 2019 to Cette adresse e-mail est protégée contre les robots spammeurs. Vous devez activer le JavaScript pour la visualiser. or using the contact form. Depending on the number of applications, a selection could be done by the organizers. Final decision will be announced before the end of December 2019. Registration will be opened in January.
Five grants will be attributed to PhD students or Post-doctoral fellows for supporting their stay in Les Houches (Grant = 450 €). To apply for the grant, please send a short CV and a cover letter to the following email address: Cette adresse e-mail est protégée contre les robots spammeurs. 4) Ground and space observatories: a joint venture to planetary sciences --- March 2-6, 2020 --- Santiago, Chile
https://conference.almaobservatory.org/planets2020/
This is a follow-up to the successful workshop organized in March 2015. The goal will be to investigate further the potential synergies between ground and space-based observatories in the exploration of the Solar System, and to continue fostering collaborations among planetary scientists through the sharing of scientific and technical knowledge.
Topics for scientific discussion will be open to all bodies of the Solar system (planets, moons, asteroids, TNOs and comets), and will cover the body itself as well as its atmosphere, and any rings. We also look forward to discussing results on exoplanets, as comparative planetology investigations relating to the properties of our Solar System. We intend to organize the sessions in a way that emphasizes the parallels between the results from ground and space-based observatories. There will also be the opportunity to display posters with dedicated sessions for everyone to read and discuss them.
On the last day, we will run a proposal preparation workshop for ALMA and JWST. Both observatories will have a proposal deadline soon after March 2020, such that the timing will be perfect to work on coordinated investigations.
Invited speakers will be announced on our website in the next few weeks as soon as they have been confirmed.
The meeting will be held at the ALMA office in Santiago, which is located on the ESO campus in Vitacura. Participation will be limited to 100. The registration fee will be 250 EUR (150 EUR for students). We hope to be able to offer financial support for a number of students.
The deadline for abstract submission will be mid-November 2019.
Finally, there will be the opportunity for a limited number of participants to fly to the North of Chile and enjoy a guided tour of the ALMA observing site on March 7. More details will be given on the website in the next weeks.
We hope to see you next year in Santiago!

7) Mars workshop --- 3-8 May 2020 --- Les Houches
Dear colleagues

The deadline for registration is 1st November 2019. As the number of participants is limited to 70, a selection may have to be made by the organising committee. The notification will be done by January 15, 2020.
More at: https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/planet-mars-5/home
Over the past fifteen years, our understanding of Mars state and evolution has made considerable progress, with the successful operation of many space missions, either in orbit or at the surface of Mars (Mars Express orbiter, the MER Spirit and Opportunity rovers, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the Phoenix lander, the Curiosity rover, the MAVEN orbiter, the ExoMars/Trace Gas Orbiter and finally InSight). Thanks to these new available data, we are now in position to address the main questions regarding our sibling planet Mars. While Mars Express and MRO have allowed us to better understand the planet’s geology, mineralogy and subsurface composition on a large scale, the MER and Curiosity rovers have provided us with in situ analyses of rock samples and their environments. The atmospheric escape rate and mechanisms have been investigated by the Mars Express and MAVEN orbiters. TGO has already provided us with important results about the atmospheric composition and the seasonal variations of the Martian atmosphere. The MY34 Global Dust Storm (June – September 2018) was a great opportunity for monitoring the response of the atmosphere, both from ground and space, in the case of a high dust content. Over the past six months, several new results, in some cases contradictory, have been obtained, with Curiosity, PFS, TGO and ground-based observations, regarding the possible presence of methane on Mars. These apparent discrepancies have led to an intense modeling effort to try to reconcile all the observations, and this question remains an active field of research. The InSight mission was successfully launched by NASA in March 2018, and is now operating at the Martian surface since November 2018. The first seismic events have been detected recently, opening a new way to study Mars' interior and activity.
The workshop “Planet Mars V” will be the fifth edition of a series which has taken place in the Center of Physics in Les Houches since 2003. These workshops were organized to bring together senior scientists, young scientists, postdocs and students in order to optimize the analysis and interpretation of space data, and to prepare the community for the best exploitation of forthcoming missions. As in the case of the previous editions, the format of the workshop will encourage discussions. Leading scientists in the interpretation of data and in modelling processes will present their views on key topics, such as (1) internal structure and magnetism; (2) volcanism, geomorphology, geology, mineralogy and petrology; (3) atmospheric cycles, water history and atmospheric escape. Special attention will be given to the prospect of future planetary missions to Mars. A session of comparative planetology will also include discussions on Venus, Mars, the Earth and Titan. Posters from students and scientists are encouraged ; they will be displayed and discussed during a dedicated poster session and coffee breaks.
The deadline for registration is November 1, 2019. Students and postdocs are especially encouraged to register (check the link on the left navigation bar) and to submit a poster. As the number of participants is limited to 70, a selection may have to be made by the organising committee. The notification will be done by January 15, 2020.
Please note: Unfortunately, the EGU 2020 General Assembly exceptionally occurs in May, and takes place at the same time as the Les Houches Workshop. Due to the strong pressure on the calendar of the workshops in Les Houches, we have not been able to change the dates of our workshop.

8) Post-doctoral position in Giant Planet Modelling at Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique, Sorbonne Université, Paris, France
A 15-month post-doctoral position in planetary atmospheric science is opened at Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD), starting late 2019 / early 2020. An extent towards a total two-year duration is possible. The position is funded by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) grant EMERGIANT and opened at Sorbonne Université on the Pierre and Marie Curie campus in the heart of Paris.
The successful applicant will join a team dedicated to giant planet modelling comprising Dr Aymeric Spiga (Senior Lecturer at Sorbonne Université, PI), Dr Sandrine Guerlet (Research Scientist at CNRS, CoI), Dr Ehouarn Millour (Research engineer at CNRS, CoI), PhD student Alexandre Boissinot (2017-2020, Jupiter dynamics), PhD student Deborah Bardet (2018-2021, Saturn stratospheric dynamics).
The successful applicant will carry out research with the new Global Climate Model [GCM] developed for giant planets at LMD, based on a coupling between the new icosahedral-grid dynamical core DYNAMICO [Dubos+2015] with radiative transfer parameterizations for Saturn [Guerlet+2014] and Jupiter [Guerlet+submitted]. The model has been successfully applied on 1) Saturn with high-resolution simulations that allowed a preliminary analysis of Saturn's atmospheric dynamics in the troposphere [Spiga+2020] and the stratosphere [Bardet+EPSC19] and 2) Jupiter with high-resolution simulations applied to its troposphere [Boissinot+EPSC18], with the perspective of a parameterization for convection currently being developed [Boissinot+EPSC19].
The successful applicant will explore through simulations with our GCM for gas giants a variety of open problems related to 1) polar dynamics 2) impact of convection, including giant convective outbursts, on the zonal jets and equatorial oscillations 3) growth and stability of large-scale vortices. Results from simulations will be compared to observations by the Cassini and Juno missions.
A PhD in astrophysics, planetary science, or geophysical fluid dynamics is required by the time of starting the position. The following skills will be considered in the evaluation process: working knowledge in planetary science (especially giant planets' environments), expertise in atmospheric dynamical modelling (including model development), experience of exploring datasets acquired by space missions (especially gas giants), ability to work in a team and to stimulate research as a community process
The successful applicant will benefit from a dynamic and stimulating research environment, with the possibility to interact with scientists in the LMD team involved with atmospheric modeling and observations of terrestrial and planetary atmospheres, as well as French collaborators from LESIA / Observatoire de Meudon and LAB / Université de Bordeaux.

Activities
