 A vos propositions!

4) SEIS Operation scientist position at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris

The SEIS experiment is now fully operational on Mars following the successful landing of the InSight mission in late November 2018 and the installation of the seismometer and its wind protection on the Martian surface in early 2019. The Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP), PI Institution of SEIS, is searching candidates for a two years operation scientist position. This position will be based in the Planetary and Space Science team3 of IPGP, at Université de Paris, Paris Rive Gauche campus. Although most of the activity will be held in the Planetary and Space Science Team of IPGP, strong interactions with the Seismology team4 of IPGP are expected.

After more than one year of operation, the InSight mission has now recorded more than 500 events and has collected long time series for the 6 seismic channels and pressure/wind channels. These data sets enable systematic data analysis, on Martian structure, seismic sources with stack/cross- correlation on both events and noise and enhancement of the signal to noise thanks to pressure decorrelation and other noise correction technics.

The goal of the operation scientist will be, for about 30% of her/his time, to contribute to operations of the SEIS experiment, both in the weekly analysis of the VBB data controlling the good health of the VBB sensors and in the weekly preparation of the Events Requests, ranking and preparing the list of events, e.g. short period seismic data, expected to be sent back to Earth in addition to the continuous SEIS data. In additions and for 50% of his time, the operation scientist will contribute to science analysis, on the detected events with a focus to structural analysis and inversion of seismic data. The remaining 20% will be left to the candidate own research project.

The candidate must have a PhD in seismology or equivalent research experience in seismology. She/he should have skills in seismic data processing, including in broadband (0.1-10 Hz) data processing. The candidate is expected to be curious, as the SEIS Mars data are new with respect to Earth seismic standard and shall have experience in seismic modeling and inversion, as well/or in site effects modelling and/or crustal seismic exploration.

The position is available starting October, 1st 2020. It will remain open until filled. Salary follows French university standard5 and depends on the research experience since the PhD defense. All basic insurance benefits are provided.

The Postdoc, funded by the French Space agency CNES in the framework of InSight operations, will join the IPGP SEIS team, a group of about 10 scientists, postdoc, PhDs and engineers. Proficient English is required for the position. A basic knowledge of French will make everyday life easier.

Applicants should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, including research project (up to 5 pages) and contact information for a minimum of two references.

Due to the impact of COVID-19 in the working visa processing, this position will be restricted to candidate able to work in France on October 1st without working visa application (e.g. candidate from European Union and/or Schengen Area).

5) Post-doc en astrochimie à Sorbonne Université

Molecular Complexity in Astrophysical Environments: Genesis of Complex Organic Molecules From Interstellar Dusts to Planetary Atmospheres.

The formation of complex organic molecules (COM) and exobiologically-relevant species on the surface of dust grains and their processing during desorption represent an important topic of investigation to build bridges between laboratory experiments and astronomical observations. These laboratory experiments may explain the abundances of COMs already detected and also to guide the future exploratory observations looking for prebiotic molecules in the Universe. MONARIS laboratory has an open position for a postdoc (1+ year) in collaboration with the Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory LCT. Combining experiments and Quantum calculations, we will investigate the energetic and non-energetic processing of interstellar ice analogs. For the present Post-doctoral project, we intend to focus on radical reactions involving H, N or O atoms and abundant astrochemical relevant species. Those radical reactions, occurring in solid phase at very low temperature between 3 and 200 K, may lead to the formation of different complex prebiotic molecules. To this end, the experimental setup that will be used allow to reproduce very low pressure and temperature conditions similar to those found in the interstellar medium and in some planetary atmospheres. Combining laboratory experiments and computational chemistry, namely Density Functional Theory calculations taking into account the periodic feature of the solid, we will investigate the evolution of COM since their formation in the solid phase till their release into the gas phase. All the studied processes occurring in solid phase are analyzed and monitored using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, through the transmission–reflection mode detection. The identification of reaction pathways leading to the formation of COM or exobiologically-relevant species in solid phase covers the first part of our project. The second part of the present project consists in studying the instantaneous or progressive desorption of interstellar ice analogs before and after energetic and non-energetic processing, by means of UV irradiation and thermal heating. Such induced sample desorption will allow to study the physical and chemical evolution of COM in the solid-gas interface which will be probed by coupling IR spectroscopy to mass spectrometry and Terahertz spectroscopy. While the mass spectrometry allows the identification of desorbed species, the THz spectroscopy will quantify, in the case of species with different isomeric forms, the proportion of each isomer. Theoretical quantum calculations modeling solid will be carried out in harmony all along the work by the LCT partners for elucidation pathways.

Applicants should be physical chemist specialized. They must have experience with experimental astrochemistry, cryovacuum systems, IR and THz spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, organic chemistry. The Candidate should submit a CV, an application letter, 4 letters of recommendation and the names and contact emails of 4 referees to Prof Lahouari Krim Cette adresse e-mail est protégée contre les robots spammeurs.
